What a difference a little box makes..

I've been making some little silver rings this week. I keep them very simple, mainly twists and coils. Sometimes I like to add texture, either by hammering or by feeding the silver through the rolling mill along with textured fabrics. So far I have had some lovely results with lace and cross stitch aida.
If anyone has any handy hints on photographing shiney things I would be eternally grateful. I always have a bit too much glare from the flash which really isn't the look I am after.
Anyway.. This week I got some new boxes delivered, and I love these little ring boxes. I had been making do with other boxes but they weren't quite right, and whilst my rings are handmade, they looked a bit 'tooo' handmade in the wrong boxes. Does that make sense to anyone else but me?
Since the minimum order for ring boxes was 50 I think I am going to be making a lot more rings in the future.

The rings are lovely, Fiona!

On the photography front, I always try to take photos (even indoors) using natural light, but it isn't always possible. My second option is to get all my lamps and turn them on near the item being photographed (but without creating that horrible glare that flash gives) and hope that that creates enough indirect light. I've got a DSLR which allows me to alter my ISO settings and thereby work with much less light - I can get away with a lot by boosting my ISO but it doesn't always work and can make for a grainy photo if overdone.

If all else fails, then I use the flash!

If you don't have a fancy camera with a flash you can bounce off ceilings / walls, you could try covering your flash with some sheer fabric to diffuse the light and make it less harsh. It might be a little tricky to do, but a bit of experimentation should give you a better effect. The professionals do it with their fancy flash guns (albeit they have gels rather than bits of fabric!), so I don't see why it wouldn't work with everyday cameras too!

Hope this helps!

Thanks Fiona, Just checked my camera and I can adjust the ISO so I think I will have a play with different settings tomorrow. I'll let you know how I get on.

What beautiful rings and they do look professional in those little boxes.
Good luck with the photography - it's something I struggle with, but I am starting to use lighting options (eg fluorescent or tungsten) on my 'point & shoot' digital. It means I can use a couple of indoor lamps and generally don't have to use the flash. I guess it's a case of practice with different settings.
